Women Leaders

Roxanne Kutzer PhD Researcher

Why did you choose Cranfield?

I chose Cranfield because of the work conducted by the International Centre for Women Leaders. I was particularly impressed by the Centre’s Female FTSE Board Report as that signalled to me that Cranfield was able to engage both government and industry in its efforts to address barriers to women’s career progression.

Topic/subject of your research.

‘Professional identity and the transition to motherhood’ - I am interested in how managerial women’s work-related identities develop as they become mothers.

Why is your topic of research important, and what impact is Cranfield having in your field/discipline?

Becoming a mother is still seen as a hurdle to career advancement. I’m interested to understand more about why this is and what strategies women engage in to shape their work-related identities as they become mothers. Through Cranfield’s International Centre for Women Leaders, I receive feedback on my research from both students and experienced academics on a quarterly basis.

What is it about Cranfield that you value most?

Having moved abroad after my first year of study, I am particularly grateful for the structure of the PhD programme within the School of Management. Through regular reviews with a panel of academics, I have the opportunity to present my research and receive feedback as I progress. In addition to the support of my Supervisor and my Centre, these panel meetings help me to stay on track and to keep me from feeling isolated despite being in another country.

Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability

Stefan Hemel PhD Researcher

Why did you choose Cranfield?

It was an interesting course, closely linked to industry and with applied research.

Topic/subject of your research.

My research explores the impact of distinct institutional logics on the search for sustainability-led innovations.

Why is your topic of research important, and what impact is Cranfield having in your field/discipline?

Given the oncoming environmental and social challenges ahead for organisations, we need a better understanding on how organisations from different sectors can work together more quickly to create innovations that are socially, environmentally and economically sustainable.

What is it about Cranfield that you value most?

Cranfield is a unique place and I enjoy being a part of this University. The ethos of putting knowledge into practice is special and we do this by solving relevant and hard-pressing issues coming both from industry and society with the help of applied science and early research. I have experienced Cranfield since 2010 as a Master Student (now a PhD) and think that both quality of teaching and research facilities are outstanding.
