Earlier this month, Dr Sarah Qureshi – PhD Aerospace alumna and CEO at Aero Engine Craft – was announced as one of twelve finalists in the Study UK Alumni Awards in Pakistan. The Awards celebrate UK higher education and the achievements of UK alumni worldwide. The finalists have been selected in recognition of outstanding achievements in their field, and their ongoing contribution to strengthening the collaborative ties between the UK and Pakistan.

Dr Qureshi has been shortlisted for the Entrepreneurial Award in recognition of her work with Aero Engine Craft to develop contrail-free aero-engines. The technology reduces aviation-induced global warming, by eliminating contrails at the source, while also recovering water from fuel emissions to induce artificial rain – treating the emissions as a resource. Sarah began developing this technology as part of her thesis during her PhD studies at Cranfield, and she now continues to collaborate with Professor Pericles Pilidis and Dr Nalianda as a Visiting Fellow, working on further innovations for the aviation industry. On hearing the news that Sarah has been shortlisted for the award, Professor Pilidis, who was her PhD supervisor, described her as “an outstanding example of a successful Cranfield graduate.” Alongside her research, Sarah is also a qualified private pilot and even learned acrobatic flying during her time at Cranfield.

Discussing this year’s finalists, Amir Ramzan, Coutry Director at the British Council in Pakistan, said: “The remarkable individuals selected as finalists for the Study UK Alumni Awards in 2020 have all taken their UK education as a starting point to excel in their chosen careers and shape the world around them. This year’s finalists are testimony not only to the diversity of UK alumni and their endeavours, but also to the transformative impact of a UK education. With more than 10,000 alumni of a UK education in Pakistan, there is much to celebrate.”

The winners of the Study UK Alumni Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Lahore, Pakistan, on 29 February. A big congratulations to Dr Qureshi on being named as a finalist, we wish her the very best of luck for the announcement of the winners.
