Stephan considers himself blessed having found something exceptionally rare in life, a profession namely providing him with joy and passion until this very day. There is some profound truth in it saying: “Welding, either you love or hate!”. Twice even, as, in an academic sense, it might be considered hardly graspable that a subject like welding can be capable of keeping a person excited and consistently employed for almost a lifetime. However, once literally “hooked” it does never let you go anymore. Proud of being nominated a Distinguished Alumni Awardee, Stephan will be sharing insights gained through his vivid journey; more than four and a half decades ago igniting his first welding arc, and starting out as a certified welder, finally even to become the President of the International Institute of Welding, the world’s largest organisation in welding and joining.”.

Programme & speakers
Stephan Egerland started his journey as an Arc Welder in 1980 both on the shop floor (heavy steel construction and engineering) and on site (pipeline construction). He is a Qualified Welding Instructor according to German Welding Society (DVS) for various welding processes and European Welding Specialist according to European Welding Federation (EWF). In addition, Stephan holds an MSc in Welding Engineering and a PhD in Manufacturing (Welding) of Cranfield University, UK. He is registered Chartered Engineer (CEng) with UK’s Engineering Council and a Senior Member of the United Kingdom Welding Institute (TWI).
Stephan joined the International Institute of Welding (IIW) in 2004, amongst others for six years holding the chair of its Technical Management Board thereby in charge of the strategic scientific alignment of this global association. He served as the IIW Treasurer, making him a voting member of IIW’s Board of Directors, and is Austria’s Delegate to IIW’s Technical Working Units C-XII (Arc Welding Processes and Production Systems), C-VI (Terminology), and C-XIX (Physics of Welding and Joining). In addition, he chaired IIW Commission C-XII-B (Arc Welding Processes) for 15 years. Stephan is appointed Associate Editor and Principal Reviewer to IIW’s flagship journal ‘Welding in the World’, and, beyond that, serves as a peer reviewer for various international scientific and engineering journals. Finally, Stephan got unanimously elected in Genoa, Italy, in 2025 by IIW’s General Assembly as President-elect of the association, commencing his presidency in 2026 during IIW’s Annual Assembly and International Conference in Salzburg, Austria.
