Programme & speakers
Dr Maxine Mayhew (PhD in the School of Applied Sciences 1998), Chief Operating Officer, Collections & Specialist Services, Biffa.
Maxine used the business understanding, technical and project management skills developed during her PhD to quickly move from R&D roles into management and leadership roles and is now the Chief Operating Officer for Biffa. Here she manages a diverse portfolio covering operational divisions of household and industrial collections, hazardous waste, construction & demolition waste processing and Company Shop group (a surplus redistributor retail business.)
Other career highlights include 20 years in leadership roles across the water industry, several years in a tier 1 contractor driving sustainable construction across the water, energy and defence sectors alongside growing a consultancy business. She has held several NED roles including Karbon Homes, Cranfield University Council and her current role as Senior independent director for the Low Carbon Contracts Company & Electricity Settlements Company.
She has a passion for creating diverse and high performing teams and is driven by making a difference in all she does. Which is why she also rescued her local village butchers shop from closure supporting the training of apprentices to keep great quality local produce available for her community!
The curiosity which made her start a career in science and engineering is now fulfilled through travel mostly to places in the world where she can spend time in nature learning about the wildlife and local communities.
