The Great Paper Aeroplane Competition, sponsored by the CCAAA

A Paper Aeroplane Competition, which is open to all students and staff of the School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing, will be held on Wednesday 21st June 2017 at 1300 hrs.

Light refreshments will be served following the completion of the competition.

The rules of the competition are as follows:

1.

The Paper Aeroplane must be constructed from paper and glue only. There are no limitations on physical dimensions. Stored energy systems for flight are permitted for category (ii), in addition to paper and glue.

2.

The Paper Aeroplane must be hand launched into free flight into the Building 83 Forum from the balcony adjacent to the PC Room.

3.

No ballistic trajectories are permitted.

4. Entrants may be individuals, groups, or both. Each entrant is allowed one Aeroplane.  Entrants should register by emailing l.hargreaves@cranfield.ac.uk stating their name(s) and course/department by 1600 on Friday 16 June 2017.
5.

A referee will be appointed who will be responsible for judging the distance travelled by the Aeroplane, the time aloft and for interpreting the competition rules.  The referee’s decisions are absolute and cannot be challenged.

6. Winners will be in four categories:

  • That which travels the greatest linear distance in the defined space (no stored energy)* - (prize £20)

  • That which travels the greatest linear distance in the defined space (stored energy)* - (prize £30)

  • That which remains aloft for the greatest elapsed time (no stored energy) - (prize £20)

  • That with the greatest technical merit**- (prize £50)

* If more than one entry runs out of space, that which flew the distance in the minimum time shall be the winner.

**The Aeroplane will have to fly well and a one page design review will be required. Novelty is expected.

A panel of judges will assess merit and their decision is final.
