These are the words of Cranfield alumnus, Jamie Johnson. Jamie, who is now the Regional Director of Civil Aviation with Transport Canada, studied for his MSc Air Vehicle Design at Cranfield in 2001.

“In the Bulldog, we were able to fly over our house in Bluntisham and wave to my 3-year-old daughter; who is now at Cambridge doing her own Masters,” Jamie adds.

The dutch roll was one of the most memorable parts of Jamie’s Cranfield experience.

The final approach

Indeed time flies, as do aircraft. It seems like yesterday, but in fact, we launched the National Flying Laboratory Centre (NFLC) campaign in Spring 2019 when the world was a very different place than it is today.

However, we are almost ready for Saab 340B’s flight home to Cranfield – a homecoming of sorts.

With support from our alumni and friends, we have already raised two-thirds of our £3 million fundraising target, We have been able to purchase the Saab 340B and we now need to modify the aircraft. While the much loved Jetstream 31, which holds fond memories for many of today’s aviation leaders, has served us well, the new Saab 340B flying classroom will enable us to continue providing best in class education to the new generation of aerospace leaders.

In this final approach, with your support, we aim to complete all the modifications required for Saab 340B to take to the skies with its first cohort of students in 2021.

Give the gift of skies to a new generation

Would you like to join us and give the next generation of high flyers the gift of the wide-open skies?

If you share our vision for the future, or indeed if you have fond memories of the National Flying Laboratory and Classroom and want to ensure that others can benefit from that same unique experience, check out the unique opportunity to sponsor a part of our new ‘flying classroom’.

Sponsoring a part of the new flying classroom is much more than a donation. It is a fantastic way of being part of the NFLC, forever!

There will be many more dutch rolls, many more phugoid and longitudinal oscillations, and of course, the sheer thrill, for generations to come, of seeing theory in action. And while your Cranfield experience may be a distant memory, you can still share in the excitement, knowing you’ve sponsored a part of Saab 340B.

Now, more than ever, you can help tomorrow’s aerospace leaders and engineers benefit from a unique education.

Together, we can ensure that Cranfield remains at the forefront of aerospace technology, discovery, and education.
